| The Centre for Computer Studies (CCS) was established as an autonomous centre within Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Mr Tan Chin Nam, General Manager of National Computer Board (NCB) was appointed as the Chairman of the first CCS Advisory Board. CCS enrolled its first batch of 121 GCE ‘A’ level students into its two-year Diploma in Computer Studies course.

CCS was declared open on 4 March 1983 by the late Minister of State (Education) and Minister in charge of the Polytechnic, Dr Tay Eng Soon.
The British Computer Society (BCS) granted students who had been awarded the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Studies, exemption from the BCS Part I examination. This was the first time the BCS is granting the exemption to a polytechnic outside the United Kingdom , and CCS was the first local polytechnic to gain the exemption. |

| 1984 |
|
CCS moved to a new premise within the Ngee Ann Polytechnic campus. The new premise was officially opened by the late Minister of State for Education and Minister-in-charge of Ngee Ann Polytechnic Dr Tay Eng Soon on 11 December 1984.
Our first 105 graduates received their diplomas at a graduation ceremony officiated by Mr Philip Yeo, Chairman of the National Computer Board. More details |

CCS ordered the ICL Series 39 Model 30 mainframe computer, a 2.2 MIPS system valued at more than S$2.5 million.
Our Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies became the first non-university part-time course to gain exemption from the British Computer Society (BCS) Part II professional examinations. With this, Ngee Ann Polytechnic became the first non-university to gain exemption for BCS Part II.

CCS signed an agreement with ICL to upgrade its mainframe facilities.
CCS received the Distinguished Corporate Award from the Singapore Computer Society (SCS), for its substantial contribution and support for Professional Development Activities with the Society.
The CCS Alumni was established.

| Mr Rodney Shaw, the first Director of CCS, left on 7 September 1988 upon completion of his employment contract. In recognition of his contributions in establishing CCS, our staff donated $2,600 to establish a trust fund for the Rodney Shaw Book Prize. The Book Prize will be awarded to an outstanding graduate of the Advanced Diploma Course in Computer Studies annually.

| Our Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies course was replaced by two new courses , the Advanced Diploma in Information Systems and Software Engineering and the Advanced Diploma in Data Communications and Networking. The British Computer Society (BCS) granted both courses exemption from its Part II professional examniation.

| CCS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Microsoft (Singapore) to equip it with the latest application software packages and to facilitate the transfer of software development expertise.

CCS lecturers led students on a study trip to Hong Kong.
To mark its 10th anniversary, CCS hosted an international conference entitled “Professional Development of IT Professionals”, organised by the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP).
A one-week computer camp was jointly organised with Mendaki to encourage IT appreciation amongst the Malay-Muslim community.

CCS was invited to assist the Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore in the National Software Competition, hosted by the National Computer Board.
The third annual CCS-Mendaki IT Workshop was held to further strengthen the IT culture of the Malay-Muslim community. The event was officiated by Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Minister-of-State for the Environment, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mendaki.

CCS collaborated with the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA) to host a workshop-cum-seminar titled “IT for People with Disabilities”. Mr Lim Boon Heng, Minister without Portfolio and Secretary-General of NTUC officiated the event.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited CCS to conduct a customised IT course for a group of South Africans from the African National Congress (ANC).
Graduating students raised funds to purchase microcomputers for the Association of the Deaf.
Over a thousand secondary school students attended a series of IT workshops and immersion programmes aimed at promoting IT awareness amongst secondary schools.

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) chose CCS's Diploma in Computer Studies course as an Exemplary Model of Industry Technology Programme.
The Centre provided technology support for the launch of Mendaki’s Internet Page-cum-Seminar.
CCS signed MOUs with Microsoft Singapore and 3Com Asia Pte. Ltd.

A new Diploma in Multimedia Computing course was launched.
CCS signed a MOU with Peripheral Connections for the transfer of multimedia software and services for the new course.
CCS organised a computer workshop for the four self-help groups in Singapore and the Handicapped Welfare Association. This is the first camp that brought all the groups together.
CCS lecturers led a group of 31 students on a study trip to Silicon Valley, USA.

The Diploma in IT (Computer Studies) was launched to replace the existing Diploma in Computer Studies course. The new programme emphasised core competencies and a wider range of elective modules to cater to the varying interests and abilities of students.
Microsoft appointed CCS as an Authorised Academic Training Programme Centre, to train IT professionals using the latest software technologies. CCS will prepare its students for certification through this programme.
CCS signed a MOU with Cabletron Systems Pte Ltd to allow the transfer of specialist knowledge of current and emerging networking technology to CCS.

CCS was commissioned as the first Regional Training Centre for the 3Com NetPrep Network Training Programme.
CCS hosted the Annual IT Day on campus. More than 800 secondary school students attended the event.

| CCS signed a MOU with Intranesis Communications Pte Ltd to allow the transfer of ColdFusion technology by providing software and services to ICT's staff and student population. |

Following a major curriculum review, CCS launched the Diploma in Information Technology course to replace the existing Diploma IT (Computer Studies) course. Students can choose to specialise in four major areas: Electronic Commerce, Multimedia Development, Network Computing and Software Engineering.
CCS signed MOU with BMC Software Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. for the transfer of specialist skills in the areas of e-business systems management, courseware development and to provide scholarships to outstanding students.
CCS was renamed as the School of InfoCommTechnology (ICT) in view of the growing convergence of Information Technology with Network Communications.
Our student body, the Computer Studies Society organised iTechOne. The first IT quiz targetted at neighbourhood secondary schools in Singapore.

The School of ICT launched a new Diploma in Information Technology (Mobile Computing) course, in view of the growth in mobile e-commerce and wireless technologies.
The School of ICT signed a $3 Million MOU with Hewlett Packard on 28 February 2002 to establish an eGarage within Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The mission of the eGarage is to cultivate the spirit of creativity and innovation among NP students through developing new solutions using leading-edge technologies.
