Server Farms
The School of ICT has several Windows-based servers some of which
are connected to a Storage Area Network (SAN). All staff and students
have access to servers in the School of ICT, Ngee Ann Polytechnic's
Intranet and Email systems.
Networking Infrastructure
Applications servers, World-Wide-Web Server, workstations and printers
are fully integrated within our ICTNet which is accessible through
the Gigabit Ethernet Network Infrastructure. All ICT labs and classrooms
are wireless-LAN ready which means that students can use their notebook
computers to access our network resources anywhere anytime. Students
and staff can also gain access to our NPNet computing facilities
for e-learning and e-services. Staff and students can access these
facilities remotely through both dialup to NPNet and via the Internet.
Software
Microsoft and Macromedia campus licensed software, network sniffer/analyser/simulator
and animation software, etc are used for coursework purposes in
the students owned notebook as well as the computers in the labs.
We have signed the Microsft Academic Alliance such that Microsoft
server-based software is available for coursework purposes.
Specialised Laboratories & Showcase
The School has specialised laboratories which are Technology Centres
for Computer Networking, Multimedia and E-commerce. The School also
houses the Certiport Test Centre for Microsoft Office Specialist
Certification, and the eGarage which is a state-of-the-art technology
showcase and living lab open to our staff, students and also industry
partners. These are equipped with high-end hardware and software
for teaching and project development work.
For example, the Networking labs are used for hands-on practical
work and development purposes. Each lab is individually configured
to expose our diploma students to the latest networking technologies.
The Multimedia labs are equipped with advanced workstations capable
of running resource-intensive multimedia applications. Multimedia
software such as 3D max, Adobe Premiere and Macromedia Director
are installed in these labs for students to design interactive multimedia
applications, create advanced animation, and perform video and film
editing. The School of ICT is the only school to have piloted the
IP Telephony and Lecture-on-Demand project with Cisco Systems. This
allows students to attend lectures outside of the lecture theatres,
or even from home. |
