Our Student Successfully Filed US Patent for his Work
Our Diploma in IT (Computer Studies) year 3 student Zachary Lim Ren Jie, filed a patent pertaining to his work on the project "Teleport (Drop-it-Home)" on 10 January 2003.
"Teleport(Drop-it-Home)" was an innovative solution that allows download of web content from anywhere into a PC location of one’s choice. Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s InnoHub Office played the mentor and advisor role during the project’s development and commercialization. His industrial mentor, iWorks Solutions, a SEED-funded company also assisted him in commercialisation.
Ren Jie was a winner in Ngee Ann Polytechnic Student Enterprize programme in 2002. He also won the 1st prize (IT/Communications Category) of the 2003 Ngee Ann Polytechnic Innovation Competition.
News Radio 93.8 broadcasted an interview with Ren Jie on 27 Mar 2003.
Ren Jie was featured in “Today” Newspaper on 26 May 2003 in a full page article entitled “When a Problem became a Project – This poly student’s idea awaits a patent”.
He was also featured in "Streats" Newspaper on 21 Aug 2003 in an article entitled "IBM snaps up whiz kid - IT gaint works with self-taught programmer to develop software that sends Web content to target PC"

Our Students Emerged National Champions in Microsoft Office Academic Skills Challenge
In the prestigious Singapore 2003 Microsoft Office Academic Skills Challenge held on 26 Apr 2003, our Diploma in IT year 2 student Desmond Ong Kok Chuan and Diploma in Multimedia Computing year 1 student Low Yi Yang emerged National Champions, having achieved perfect score for Microsoft Excel 2002 (XP) Core Skills and Microsoft Word 2002 (XP) Core Skills respectively.
The competition was organised by Microsoft and NTUC, supported by IDA, NICC and NLB. It was opened to all Tertiary Institutions, Secondary Schools and ITEs and attracted more than 100 participants.
Both champions represented Singapore for the Certiport’s Microsoft Office XP Worldwide Competition held from 17-21 May 2003 in Orlando, Florida, USA.
(Desmond Ong Kok Chuan graduated from Nan Hua Secondary School in December 2000.
Low Yi Yang graduated from Assumption English School in December 2001) |

Our Students Awarded Microsoft Scholarships
Our Diploma in IT year 2 students Alan Ng Wei Lun, Shen YiZhe and Yang ZhenBin were awarded the Microsoft Certified Application Developer(MCAD) Scholarships on 16 May 2003. The students will be sponsored for MCAD courses which are valued at $10,000 each.
(Alan Ng Wei Lun and Yang Zhenbin graduated from Commonwealth Secondary School in December 2000.

| Our Students Won the 1st and 3rd Prizes of the NP Innovation Competition
Our Diploma in IT (Computer Studies) year 3 students won the 1st and 3rd prizes (IT/Communications Category) of the 2003 Ngee Ann Polytechinic Innovation Competition.
- Lim Ren Jie won the 1st prize for the project "Drop-it home".
"Drop-it Home" was an innovative solution that allows download of web content from anywhere into a PC location of one's choice.
- Ong Wee Biao and Alan Pwa Yong Kee won the 3rd prize for the project “Location-Aware Communication and Navigation System?
The System for Pocket PC-enabled PDAs can be used to search for virtually anything in Ngee Ann Polytechnic's compound, e.g. ATMs, staff, offices, canteens etc.
In addition, users can also find their way to their intended destinations by using the navigation function with a GPS-enabled PDA. They can also find out where they are in the campus as well as locating their friends and classmates using this GPS function.
Other than it's navigation functions, this application has an instant messaging service that allows students to contact one another. There is also a Short Message Service (SMS) function to allows users to send SMS messages to their friends' mobile phones.

Our Lecturer is Microsoft's Most Valuable Professional
Each year, Microsoft gives the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award to outstanding members of a Microsoft online Developer Forum. The MVP Award is given in recognition of a recipient's technical expertise, spirit of community, and willingness to help his peers by providing reliable and accurate answers to technical questions about Microsoft products & technologies.
After serious evaluation of the many qualified candidates, the Microsoft Asia MVP Committee is very pleased to recognize our lecturer Lee Wei Meng as a Microsoft Asia MVP . Wei Meng's spirit of volunteerism, technical expertise and strong willingness to help others has impressed Microsoft, and his outstanding contributions to online communities have improved their content, as well as increased Asia users' technical level.
Wei Meng received the Award in Shanghai on 22 April 2002.
The MVP has been traditionally awarded in the US, this is the first time the MVP is awarded in Asia. |

Our year 3 students from the Diploma in IT course Enamul Hasan & Thanaseelan Vengdasalam received the Asia-Europe Classroom (AEC) Award. The award was given out in Tampere, Finland during the Second International Teachers' Conference on 12 Sep 2002.
Enamul & Thana were involved in a joint project with Raffles Girls Secondary School they submitted a web site which they have developed. |

Our Students Developed Web Site for British Council
The British Council's Montage Singapore Web site (www.montageplus.co.uk/singapore) developed by our second year students from the Diploma in Multimedia Computing course
was officially launched on 1 April 2002. Our students Jean Leow Qiu Yen & Ng Jia Xun were commissioned to develop the web site after they emerged as champions in the Montage Web Design Competition held in December 2001.
The students received $1000 & a palm PDA each at the Montage Singapore Presentation held at Meritus Negara Hotel on 1 Apr 2002. |

Our Graduate received the Singapore Computer Society IT Youth Award
Our 1999 graduate, Leo Chen Hong received the prestigious Singapore Computer Society IT Youth Award on 24/2/2001. The IT Youth Award is introduced to recognise outstanding youths for their creativity, critical thinking skills and capabilities in IT accomplishment, research and projects.
While studying in our school, Leo Cheng Hong and fellow student Wan Chih Hui, won two Gold Medals in the third National Skills Competition 1998 - an unprecedented feat for an event that normally awards a gold medal for only one winner. Chen Hong then represented Singapore and emerged as World Champion in the 35th World Skills Competition in Canada in 1999, a first for Singapore in the IT Youth Catgeory.

Student's Final Year Project "Virtual Secretary" featured in Computerworld
Our student Foo Chuanwei's final year project "Virtual Secretary" was featured in Vol.7, Issue No. 45 of the Computerworld. ChuanWei developed a low-cost LAN-based , client-server office automation system suitable for small companies. The system works like a secretary to make life easier for her employer by assisting the employer to track his employees, providing communication services for the company. The system has been successfully implemented for Altec, an airline ticketing company in Singapore. |

"I felt competent and equipped to cope with the job demand right away after graduation. The system analysis and design, and programming skills acquired through the course allowed me to have a very quick start for my career as a programmer analyst. As the course is very project-oriented. I learn how to manage project, do research work and think "out of the box" when encountering problems and most importantly look at things from the helicopter view. |

World Champion in IT skills competition
In the 35th World Skills Competition in Montreal (Canada), held from the 11th - 14th Nov 99, our graduate, Leo Chen Hong representing Singapore, emerged as the World Champion in the IT (Software Application) Youth Category. The IT category was fiercely and closely competed in the field of software applications - Spreadsheet, Database, Word Presentation & Graphic Processing. In the 4 days of tough and gruelling competition, coupled with the biting cold of below freezing point, Chen Hong - equiped with the skill and knowledge, maintained his focus and composure, and his can-do-attitude, emerged as the World Champion. A first for Singapore in the IT Youth Category. |

We were commissioned as the First Regional Training Centre for 3Com NetPrep Network Training programme on 5 March 1999. The NetPrep programme introduced in Singapore is the first outside the United States. This programme is to support the Economic Development Board's overall plan for a knowledge-based economy. |

1st Innovative Project Showcased at Singapore Science Centre
"Learn Driving The Virtual Reality Way" - A brainchild of lecturer Ms Sim Peck Hiah and students Loke Yew Leong and Wang An Seng. This project was selected by the Singapore Science Centre for its 1st Innovation Showcase for tertiary institutions in 1996. This virtual driving simulator helps L-plate drivers learn how to drive the painless way, and save money on lessons by practicing on a virtual driving circuit.
The simulator consists of two modules. The first is a learning module for a driver to familiarise with the various traffic rules and signs. The second is a testing module that allows a driver to put into practice what one had learnt. For additional realism, intelligent objects like vehicles are incorported. The virtual set-up helps driver to adjust his speed in response to changing traffic lights and other vehicles, and to slowdown at box junctions.

| Our Course is selected as Exemplary Model
Our Diploma in Computer Studies course was selected by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation's (APEC) working group as an Exemplary Model of Industry Technology Programme in 1995. APEC working group selected 52 programmes as Exemplary Models from over 200 submissions. The submissions were selected from various countries and evaluated by an international committee. Only five programmes from Singapore were successfully selected. Out of the five, only one IT related programme Model, Our Diploma in Computer Studies course was selected. |
